Pastor’s Letter – March 27, 2020 – Where We Are

An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

Exodus 20:24

Where does this day find you? Answers abound to that question. We are in our homes or the homes of family members. Maybe we are still going to work everyday. We are in the market place to buy necessities. Where we are the passage today speaks to us.

The earthen altar wasn’t fancy or gilded with gold or precious stones. That altar was build from what God made. We might call it common but worship has a way of transforming the common to the extraordinary. Build an altar today from your common circumstances. Build it where you are and the Lord will come and bless you.

Poetry: Following this theme of altar building I hope you will enjoy this poem by George Herbert.

The Altar
by George Herbert

A broken ALTAR Lord, thy servant rears,
Made of a heart, and cemented with tears:
Whose parts are as thy hand did frame;
No workman's tool hath touch'd the same.
A HEART alone
Is such a stone,
As nothing but
Thy pow'r doth cut.
Wherefore each part
Of my hard heart
Meets in this frame,
To praise thy name.
That if I chance to hold my peace,
These stones to praise thee may not cease.
O let thy blessed SACRIFICE be mine,
And sanctify this ALTAR to be thine.

Music: Denise heard this on Facebook and loved it. I thought I would share it with you today. Enjoy!

Prayer Requests: I received this prayer request over Facebook from Mrs. Vicki Hoppe. Please prayer for Chelsea Foster. “Our family is in need of prayers right now please. My uncle Don is in ICU on a vent, he was being treated for the virus and was not getting enough oxygen.”

Catechism: The Principles of the Christian Faith.

  • Question 22: How many of mankind were created at the beginning?
  • Answer: Two; Adam the man, and Eve the woman: from both whom, all mankind did afterward proceed.
  • Question 23: What did God do after creation?
  • Answer: By his providence he preserves and governs his creatures, with all things belonging to them.
  • Question 24: What befell the Angels after their creation?
  • Answer: Some, continued in that holy estate wherein they were created; some, fell and became devils.

Have a great Friday! All my best.

And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

Exodus 20:25
