Pastor’s Letter – May 30, 2020 – Seek Ye The Lord

Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired

Zephaniah 2:1

Dear Church and Friends,

Have you ever had a salesperson tell you that this was your last chance? The price was going up or the supply was running out or something to make you buy their product. Most of the time that is just a trick of the selling trade. However, we run into a statement like that in Zephaniah.

This call to the people of God is no salesperson’s trick, it’s the real deal.

  • Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

Zephaniah told the people that this was their last chance. Judgment from God was about to overspread the nation and they had one opportunity to renew their vows. This is always an appropriate word for any generation. We can say with the king in Jonah’s prophecy, “Who can tell if God will turn and repent.”

Let’s seek the Lord and pray that He will hide us from the wrath to come.

Poetry: The Gardener by C. Ellis Osterbrock. Taken from Osterbroken Octuplets and Other Poems.

My green hands raised for how long I could not tell
In breezes they floated about
My legs grew thick and wandered new terrains
Lapping up water below the soil
In time, I wandered away from the sun's light
I wandered into shallow soil with no moisture for my limbs

Then the Gardener's hand reached for me
I knew he'd pluck me by my withered roots
My dry brown hands no longer giving glory to his purposes
But his hand gripped my trunk
And then he gently touched my leaves
And green
I felt alive for once
His water poured over me
He know me and I became full of his knowledge
Alive
And I was placed in his bright garden again.

Prayer Request: Please pray for Brandon O’Sullivan, Santa Cruz, Calif.

Brandon O’Sullivan planted Gospel Community Church in Santa Cruz, Calif. Pray for us as we are considering the purchase of a church property in the neighborhood in which we are currently renting. The current owners want to demolish this beautiful, historic property and replace it with housing. The neighbors are saddened by this and want it to be rescued. We have an opportunity now to purchase the property. Pray that we would have wisdom as this is a very challenging time, and we are a very young church plant. Pray that if God leads us down the path of pursuing a purchase that He would provide favor in the eyes of the owners and the funds that we would need. Pray most of all that we would act in faith and not in fear.

The Pastor’s Letter is coming to an end. The last one will be published on September 28, 2021.

Question 63: In what did their salvation consist?

Answer: In the remission of their sin, and the reparation of God’s image in them.

Question 64: What followed upon the repairing of that image?

Answer: A continual battle both within and without.

Question 65: From whence does this battle proceed?

Answer: From the two contrary images in mankind.

“Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.”

All my best.

Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.
