Pastor’s Letter – June 9, 2020 – Miracles of the Cross

Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

Matthew 27:54

Dear Church and Friends,

Bishop William R. Nicholson wrote a wonderful little book called, The Six Miracles of Calvary. The chapters are sermons Bishop Nicholson preached at St. Paul’s Church, Philadelphia. Four of the six miracles that he treats all happen in our passage in Matthew 27:50-53.

Of the final miracle (the resurrected saints) Bishop Nicholson said, “It is a statement of one of the grandest miracles, a gigantic piece of supernaturalism, supernatural in the sense of being wholly miraculous.”

What was God doing? The graves were opened at the death of Christ because of the earthquake. But it wasn’t until after the resurrection of Christ that the inhabitants of those graves came out. Nicholson said, “Those revived bodies of saints walking the streets of Jerusalem were designed of God as a similitude, a foreshadowing of the life of immortality and eternal glory; but as actual occurrences, they were also a demonstration of the certainty of that of which they were the similitude.”

Those resurrected saints are a sign of what we have to look forward to. The grave will not keep us down. “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (1 Cor. 15:55). Because Jesus is free from the grave so shall we be. We too will get up and walk around. What a beautiful miracle the cross of Christ gives us.

Prayer Request: Please pray for the Yawo of Northern Mozambique.

  • (YAH-oo) – During this season of COVID-19, the government of Mozambique has allowed people to meet in groups of 10 or less. Rather than having a church service in homes, one church in northern Mozambique has broken up into smaller groups to go from house to house of interested people to read the Bible with them. Please pray that many neighbors will come to hear the Word of God being taught and that people hearing the Word will repent and believe.
