Pastor’s Letter – June 23, 2020 – Some Doubted, Some Tattled

Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

Matthew 28:11

Dear Church and Friends,

Intrigue, fabrications, and cover-ups are the ingredients for many thrillers. Today we find those elements in the resurrection story minus the thrills. This is no fictional tale, rather a true retelling of the events surrounding the resurrection of Christ.

It is disturbing because it reveals the division between the world and the church. We so often want to believe that the world system is at peace with the gospel but it’s not. They have an agenda and this comparison in Matthew 28 shows us how steep the divide is.

Comparison of Matthew 28:11-15 and Matthew 28:16-20

11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch

came into the city,

and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,

13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.
14 And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.

15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. (Matthew 28:11-15)

but some doubted. (Verse 17)

16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him:

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:16-20)

(I tried to line these columns up. I’ll have to work on this side by side column thing.) Just a brief glance at the comparison shows how dark and oppressive the lie was. And one lie led to another. There is no freedom there.

There is freedom in Christ. No lie, just the truth – all power is given to him! We are free to tell a wonderful story and teach others the same gospel truth that Jesus gave to these disciples gathered on a mountain top somewhere in Galilee.

Prayer Request: Please pray for the following.

  • David and Darryl Hines’ son had surgery on his eyes today at CEI. Please pray for his recovery.
  • Aaron Manning planted Fort Hill Community Church in Gorham, Maine. We recently learned that for the rest of the summer we will not be able to return to the space we rent. We are currently trying to find a new place to meet as a church for at least the summer. Please pray that God would provide this place to us and through it open new avenues for faithful ministry. This may be exactly what He is doing. Thank you.

Question 92: Repeat the Belief or the Creed of the Apostles.

Answer: I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. He rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended in heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost. The holy Church universal, the communion of saints: the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

All my best.

And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
