Pastor’s Letter – July 10, 2020 – What’s in Egypt?

And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

Genesis 26:2

Dear Church and Friends,

Where do you go when famine comes? We don’t have a problem with famines do we? But we do face difficult seasons of dryness in our families, jobs, and relationships. These times can cause us to look for help from worldly sources.

For Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, apparently the place to go during a famine was Egypt. Abraham went there in Genesis 12:10 “And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.”

But for Isaac, the Lord had a different plan.

  • And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

Isaac was to look to the hand of the Lord. Even though famine raged, and the voices of suffering men were all around him, he was not to be scared off from the promised land. The patriarch lives out what David said, “Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us” (Psalm 123:2).

We can be the source of our own famine. Remember Amos’ words, “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:” (Amos 8:11). You’ll never find the Word of the Lord in Egypt. Sometimes we go off to Egypt thinking we are doing ourselves a favor but what we find there is dryness and thirst.

Let’s look to Him for our satisfaction and provision.

Prayer Request: Please pray for the following.

  • Mindy Hammonds’ father was diagnosed with skin cancer. Please lift him up along with his wife and children.
  • Southeast Asian Peoples. Please pray for the needs of the many who have lost jobs due to the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. The factory workers and tourist industries have been hit hard. Families are struggling to make ends meet with the cost of food and shelter. Many workers in urban areas have returned to the homes of their relatives who live in villages in order to live off the land, but even that is difficult and sometimes barely sufficient for families. Pray that the local churches will share compassionately to help those who are in need.
