Pastor’s Letter – September 1, 2020 – A Warning for the Church

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Luke 6:46

Dear Church and Friends,

The sand castle parable of Luke 6:46-49 is a well loved passage. However, the events of the last several weeks demonstrate just how quickly a house can fall. This is a message for the church.

During the month of August several reports came out indicating the trouble Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty University, found himself in. It is a tale of money, privilege, and pride that led to open sin. Julie Roys has followed the scandal and her reporting can be found by following this link.

While we might grieve over the fall of a prominent Christian leader we should also take notice of the conditions under which it occurred. The Falwells lived an opulent lifestyle funded by the university. This is the medium in which the privilege and the pride are allowed to grow.

So many leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention as well as Evangelical Christianity in general are steeped in a culture of money. Wealth robs us of the ability to dig down deep and lay our foundations on The Rock. It creates privilege because we believe we deserve special treatment from everyone else and we forget that we need Christ. Finally, because of privilege and pride we decide that we shouldn’t deny ourselves.

Just like Jesus said, we call him Lord but we don’t behave like he is Lord. Money, privilege, pride, and pleasure have replaced him in our hearts. That is the story of the Falwells, but they are not the first and won’t be the last ones to fall due to a sandy foundation.

Dear church, be warned, dig down deep, lay your foundation on what cannot be moved, and despise all the treasures of the world.

How did He satisfy God’s wrath for us?

By His obedience, prayer, and everlasting sacrifice.

165

Why is He called our only Prophet?

He ever was, is, and shall be the only Teacher of the Church.

166

What then were the Prophets and the Apostles?

All these were His disciples and servants.

167

Why were all these honorable offices given to Him?

That He might deliver us from sin.

All my best,

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
