Pastor’s Letter – October 6, 2020 – Supporting Jesus

And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.

Luke 8:3

Dear Church and Friends,

We are bombarded with requests for donations everyday. Lately, at my house, I’ve seen an increase coming from political groups. I even got one from a candidate scolding me for not giving to their campaign. It seems that we are so use to them that they pass by unnoticed, most of the time.

No one gives frivolously. We either give according to a plan or we don’t give at all. Most of the time our giving is based on things that matter to us. That’s why we create a giving plan; because it’s important.

In Luke 8:1-3 we find three women named who gave because Jesus mattered to them. The woman in 7:37-38 who brought the alabaster jar to Simon’s house gave a beautiful gift to Jesus. But these ladies gave freely of all they had to the practical needs of Jesus ministry.

Mary, Joanna, and Susanna had been touched by Christ and their response was to give all they could to help him. The KJV translates their gifts as “their substance,” the CSB says, “their possessions.” They and the many others who are unnamed were the supporting cast of Jesus’ itinerant ministry.

These women speak yet today. They call us to give freely, to support the ministry of the church. They challenge us to be the unnamed group who stands silently by to make sure the work goes forward. Mary, Joanna, and Susanna want us to do it for the same reason; because Jesus has touched us.

Are you supporting Jesus with your substance? If you have been touched by Christ what is holding you back? Make your freewill gift and support the work of Jesus in this day.

Prayer Request: Please pray for the following.
  • McKeel and Angelene Bowden, Zionsville, Indiana. McKeel and Angelene Bowden planted Real Life Ministries Indiana in Zionsville, Ind. “Please ask the Lord of the harvest to raise up workers for His fields; the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask God to raise up core team members who are with us in heart, soul, time and resources. Please pray for our growing needs as we head into the season of launching public gatherings at Real Life Ministries. We need boldness to make big requests of others while maintaining our faith that God alone will supply our needs as He has promised.”
  • Barbara Smith, who will be having a procedure at the hospital tomorrow.
  • Lois Lunsford, who is recovering from pneumonia.

Catechism: Craig’s Catechism (1581) [The Second Part of God’s Honor.]

196

How did He redeem us?

He suffered death for us willingly, according to God’s decree.

197

Why did He suffer under the form of righteousness?

To assure us better that we are free from God’s judgment.

198

But Pilate the judge pronounced Him innocent?

That made greatly for our comfort.

199

What comfort have we in that?

That He died not for His own sins, but for ours.

All my best.
