Pastor’s Letter – January 5, 2021 – When Joseph Lost His Coat, Again.

There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Genesis 39:9

Dear Church and Friends,

Nothing said “Joseph” to his father like the coat of many colors. That’s why the brothers used it to cover their sin and sell their lie. Now the slave of Potiphar has a new coat. This one was a coat of authority over all his master’s holdings. Just like the colorful one this jacket was front and center in Joseph’s trial.

Just like his brothers, Potiphar’s wife stripped Joseph of his badge of authority. He ran away from sin and she plotted how to sell her lie. A visual would put it over the top. Potiphar threw him in jail. A foreign slave in an Egyptian jail. He had no hope of getting out.

However, Joseph, who was true to his first coat by obedience to his father, was true to his second coat by obedience to God. He looked temptation in the eye and said, “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” It’s a sin against God, against the trust his master had for him, against himself, and against his master’s wife.

Even though she had the power dynamic on her side (Joseph was a slave, she was the owner) Joseph still was in charge of himself and refused even though he knew that eventually his refusal would get him in trouble.

Are you willing to be obedient to the Father’s commands even though it will cost you? Joseph ran from sin; don’t run toward it. He refused momentary pleasure for something greater and we are still reading about his bravery today. Say “no” to Potiphar’s wife, no matter what she offers you.
