Sunday Morning Worship – October 17, 2021 – The Need for the Gospel

Dear Church and Friends,

Do we really believe that people need the gospel? Are people in their heart-of-hearts basically good? We often think that moral actions, controlled behavior, good deeds, an organized disciplined life, a willing smile, a well-met attitude, a soft answer to angry words, religious observance, a well-heeled lifestyle, charitable offerings, obedience to community laws, a reverence for patriotic themes, a mind that cherishes family and community history, or a willingness to sacrifice for others indicates goodness of heart.

We forget the lesson of Jeremiah, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Paul and company experienced the desperately wicked hearts of men when the mob spoke up in Lystra.

All my best,
