Pastor’s Letter – October 2, 2020 – Blessed and Suffering

And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Beth–lehem.

Genesis 35:19

Dear Church and Friends,

Is it possible to be blessed by God and experience suffering? We struggle with that thought because we reason that if God has blessed us then everything is blessed (i.e. growing, strong, prosperous, happy, healthy, and etc). The prosperity gospel thrives on this assumption and succeeds because of it.

If we look at Jacob’s experience from the time he saw Rachel in Genesis 29:10 until he entered into Egypt, he was a blessed man suffering. God met Jacob at Bethel and promised to be with him. He confirmed the promise to him again in 31:3, 32:28, and 35:10-12.

Yet during all that time and under the blessing of God, Jacob suffered greatly. Here are some of the ways in which he was afflicted.

  • He was deceived by Laban ten times (Gen. 31:41).
  • He was afraid of his brother, Esau (Gen. 32).
  • His daughter Dinah was raped (Gen. 34).
  • His sons slaughter the man Shechem and his entire city (Gen. 34).
  • His mother’s nurse, Deborah dies (Gen. 35:8).
  • His wife Rachel dies in childbirth (Gen. 35:16-20).
  • His son Reuben sleeps with Jacob’s wife Bilhah (Gen. 35:22).
  • His father Isaac dies (Gen. 35:27-29).
  • His son Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers (Gen. 37)
  • His son Judah acts foolishly and brings shame on himself (Gen. 38).

We too will suffer in this life but if we are in Christ the blessing of God rests upon us. We can trust that the adversity we face is being used by our heavenly father to refine and train us. Nothing happens to the church that is out of the control of the Head of the Church, Jesus Christ. No matter what your challenge is today trust in the One who promised to be with you.

Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.

Pastor’s Letter – September 29, 2020 – Little Love

And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

Luke 7:42

Dear Church and Friends,

Love is such a tricky, fickle word. In our day, it tends to mean a romantic emotion tending toward a sexual expression. We often emphasize compassion and desire over fidelity and sacrifice.

In Luke 7:40-50 Jesus gave a short parable on the subject of love. Let’s breakdown the story into its parts.

  • (Verse 41) There was a certain creditor. Jesus created a situation that comes right out of everyday living. We know about creditors and the trap of borrowing and lending.
  • which had two debtors: Where there is a creditor there is always a debtor. Solomon tells us about this relationship in Proverbs 22:7.
  • the one owed five hundred pence, This was an extreme debt! anyone under this amount of debt was in trouble.
  • and the other fifty. While a lot of money, this was more manageable. The debtor in this case was probably able with time and focus to pay it off.
  • (Verse 42) And when they had nothing to pay, They were both insolvent and reckoning day had come just like in the parable of Matthew 18:23-35.
  • he frankly forgave them both. Here is where the parable turns. We would never expect a creditor to forgive a debt. This is welcomed grace, not earned but simply given.
  • Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? So why does love come in here? Unexpected grace always produces love. We bond instantly with those who give freely and without thought of reward.

But how much do we love? Simon loved Jesus but he didn’t show it very well. Love had not motivated him to wash Jesus feet or even provide for His feet to be washed. Love had not motivated him to greet him with a kiss as Jesus entered his house. Love had not motivated him to anoint Jesus as his honored guest. Simon showed little love.

Maybe he thought because he was a good person, a Pharisee who kept the Law and lived a strict life, that he was not so bad. Remember that whether 500 or 50 both were unable to pay. Both would face outer darkness without forgiveness. Simon forgot all about his debt. It did not motivate his love.

What about you? What did the Creditor forgive for you? How great was your debt? Your debt was so large and you were so insolvent that you could never pay it back. Does that motivate your love? We all forget sometimes, like Simon, we don’t show our love. Take time to consider how you are showing your love for His gracious forgiveness.

188

May not this life be lost, as it was in Adam?

No, for our flesh is joined personally with the Fountain of life.

189

Then all men are sure of this life?

Not so, but only those who are joined with Him spiritually.

190

What then does our carnal union with Christ avail for us?

Nothing, without our spiritual union with Him.

191

What purpose is served by His mother’s virginity?

It is a seal of His miraculous conception.

All my best.

Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

Pastor’s Letter – September 25, 2020 – Put Away Your Idols

And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth–el, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

Genesis 35:1

Dear Church and Friends,

What should a person do to prepare themselves to meet God? Jacob gives us a recipe for such an occasion. The Lord spoke to him and told him to go back to Bethel; the place where it all started. (Jacob saw the ladder there and God spoke to him and promised to bring him back.) Twenty years later he’s back and it’s time to make the trip complete. However this time he isn’t traveling alone, but has a great company of people with him.

After receiving instruction from God he lays out his requirements for preparation. He says:

  • Put away the strange gods that are among you, Even though the Law had not yet been given Jacob knew in his heart that the worship of the Lord God was exclusive. To prepare his people he had to separate them from their idolatry.
  • and be clean, This is a purification of the heart not of the flesh. When the idol is removed the heart must be cleansed. God looks on the heart.
  • and change your garments: These were stained by the worship of the false gods. They also represent their habits and routines. The idols demanded certain daily exercises from the worshiper. So to extract every vestige of idol worship from his group they would have to change.

Just like Jacob, we are headed toward an uncertain future. The church must prepare by focusing on holiness. Jacob’s words ring true still today. Not as a way of salvation; no man can be saved based on deeds done. Our relationship is based on His grace, but we have a great responsibility to walk in holiness.

Let us put away our idols and seek purification of heart and habit before that uncertain future arrives. Many will be looking to the church for help and hope, we need to be ready.

Prayer Requests: Please pray for the following.
  • Students and Young Professionals in Seoul. Please pray for the university students, young adults, and young professionals of Seoul, South Korea. Sadly, very few of them claim to have faith in Jesus. They have been pressured to focus on studying and competing for good jobs. They strive to be beautiful and financially comfortable in order to succeed in their society. Pray for these young people to realize the ultimate emptiness of chasing after these things, and to develop a hunger for truth. Ask God to open their hearts and minds to the gospel so they can experience the true satisfaction and joy that is found in a relationship through Jesus.

184

Was He only made free from sin?

No, but He was also filled with the Holy Spirit without measure..

185

Why was the fullness of the Spirit given to Him?

That He might bestow the Spirit upon us.

186

Why was He made man like unto us?

That He might die for us in our own nature.

187

What follows upon His incarnation?

That life and righteousness are placed in our flesh.
